Breastfeeding and the Risk of Malocclusion: A Meta-Analysis
This systematic review and meta-analysis set out to answer a deceptively simple question: does breastfeeding reduce the chance a child develops a malocclusion — crooked, crowded, or poorly aligned teeth and jaws? The authors searched six databases and pooled the results into a single adjusted estimate.
The answer was consistent. Children who were breastfed, breastfed exclusively, or breastfed for longer periods had lower odds of malocclusion than those who weren't. The pattern showed up across different ways of slicing the data, which is what gives a meta-analysis its weight — it's not one study's quirk but a signal that survives across many.
This matters because it locates one of the earliest forces shaping the face. The vigorous, coordinated sucking of breastfeeding exercises the tongue, jaw, and palate in a way bottle-feeding does not. Long before braces are ever discussed, the way an infant feeds is already nudging the architecture of the mouth toward — or away from — having enough room.
