Identical twins share essentially the same DNA, which makes them a natural experiment for one of the oldest questions in facial development: how much is genetics, and how much is everything else? This longitudinal study followed 33 pairs of untreated monozygotic twins over time, measuring how the soft tissues of their faces grew and how closely the patterns matched between each pair.

Where genetically identical twins grow alike, the influence is largely genetic; where they diverge, environmental and functional factors — habits, breathing, posture — are doing the work. By tracking untreated twins as they grew, the researchers could estimate the genetic contribution to facial soft-tissue development and, by implication, how much room remains for non-genetic influences.

This matters because the project's central claim is that crowded faces and receding jaws are often not a fixed genetic destiny but a developmental warning sign.
